China’s inventions for our daily lives
When we talk about China’s inventions, we usually talk about compass, paper, explosive and silk. However there are also inventions that affects our daily lives and we are not aware of it.
Below are some of the inventions mentioned above:
1. Ice cream : It was first made by the Chinese and then spread to Europe.
2. Zoo : In ancient China, the royal family usually kept some exotic animals in cages in a garden for pleasure viewing. The animals included lion, tiger, zebra, giraffe etc presented by envoys from faraway countries. That is why there are no lion in China but the lion dance exists. Stone lions also decorate the entrances of palaces, temples and other buildings. Anyway the zoos in ancient China were only for the enjoyment of the royal family and high ranked officials. Ordinary citizenry had no chance to view the exotic animals. This is different from the present day zoo which is for everybody.
3. Greeting cards: In ancient China the Chinese usually brought greeting cards to their friends or relatives who are celebrating birthdays or important festivals like Chinese New Year. They never sent by post which did not exist yet but brought the greeting cards by hand. In fact, my mother once told me that when she was a damsel, she often presented greeting cards by hand to her friends every year during Chinese New Year. She never sent the cards by post.
4. Noodle: Noodle was invented by the Chinese. When Marco Polo visited China he found the Chinese noodle could be made into different dishes and he brought some noodle back to Italy. Gradually the Italian had their own way of making noodle dishes like spaghetti. In China, they call noodle as “mian”, In Malaysia everybody know what is "mee".

Mr. Moy Kok Ming, borned in Ipoh, Malaysia was educated in Sam Tet Secondary School Ipoh and Language Centre, University of Malaya,Kuala Lumpur, majoring in Translation. He writes about politics and current affairs both in Chinese and English. Some of his writings had won awards

(Baba
and Nonya)”。

(Mansur
Shah)。

戚的称呼,则全用闽南话,如pek-pek(伯伯),chek-chek(叔叔),koh(姑),ee

The moderates and the non-moderates
The moderates and the non-moderates
The failure of long ruling parties in Japan and other long ruling governments in Asia has prompted many people to fathom whether Malaysia will confront the same phenomenon in future. In fact if not for the strong support of the two East Malaysian states, Barisan Nasional might have fallen and the opposition took over in March 2008.
Actually most Malaysians especially the non-indigenous voters support the moderate political parties especially the component parties of Barisan Nasional. That is why BN and the Alliance have been in power for more than half a century. When the DAP tried to team up with PAS some years ago, it was catastrophic for Lim Kit Siang and Karpal Singh who confronted dismal failure even in urban areas, because the urban voters punished them for co-operating with the politicians whom they did not like.
In Malaysia the moderates were nationalist while the non-moderate has recently become internationalists, who will ban anything against their internationalist ideal including their own traditional culture. (e.g. makyong dance). Turkey is the most modern country in their religious world. The Turks even at one time banned the wearing of head scarf for women, but they cannot escape from the internationalism mentioned. Look at Indonesia, the non-moderates who had embraced internationalism, had created immense havoc for their country. They not only bombed Bali and Jakarta, they even planned to bomb the residence of their moderate President. Even amidst the earthquake calamity of Padang, Sumatra, there were shooting in Jakarta international airport. That is the peril of the existence of non-moderates in any country.
Actually, for whatever religion or belief, as long you are a moderate, you are not dangerous to other people. For instance, China was ruled by the non-moderate Communist during the pre-Deng Xiao Ping era and there were much suffering for the Chinese. At that time Malaysian could not go to China or do business there. However, after Deng Xiao Ping came to power, China had been ruled by the moderate Communist until today. Not only the Chinese do not have any more pang, their country prospers and became the fourth largest economic entity in the world, after USA, Japan and Germany. Nowadays, Malaysians can visit, do business or study in China, whenever they want, because China is no more dangerous as in the pre-Deng Xiao Ping era. Even the President of Taiwan (acute foe of Mainland China) Ma Ying Jeou commented we should not compare the present Chinese leadership with the leaders of the pre-Deng Xiao Ping period, for they are as astute as any leaders of the present world power.
Dr. Mahathir had written an article entitled “The Modern Middle Kingdom” in his blog which said that during Lee Kuan Yew’s visit to Malaysia, the Singaporean leader lectured to the Malaysians and said that MCA should help BN to win in election. We can fathom his worry. If Malaysia is to be ruled by the non-moderates, what happened to Kuwait might happen to his tiny country.
Corruption, inefficient governance, anarchism (high crime rate and large number of illegal immigrants), haughtiness etc may lead to the downfall of the present ruling party of Malaysia. Rectification is significant to maintain their power in future. However, it is difficult for them to countenance the advance of internationalism as mentioned above. The case of Kartika (who drank beer) has made some people open their eye and ponder whether the moderates are advancing towards non-moderation. Just type the word Kartika in any internet search machine and you will see how many thousands of titles pertaining to her, because the Western hypocrites who always talked about human rights are staring at us. We do not know this is a boon or a bane to the Malaysian reputation as a moderate country.
In conclusion, if the present legislator wants to avoid what had happened to Japan, the above rectification is not insurmountable, but the internationalism which spread from Iran to Turkey, Afghanistan, Indonesia etc are the most challenging. .

English is not only important in Science and Mathematics
English is not only important in Science and Mathematics
Some years ago, while I was in Hong Kong, I was invited to visit Zhangjiajie (Hunan, China) on a commercial basis. So I have to call the airline company for an extension of another 5 days. I spoke in Cantonese, thinking that this Hong Kong dialect would make me closer to the person I spoke to. However, my request was futile because the airline staff never try to help me. On the next day, I called the same airline speaking English and this time my request was successful and I save a thousand ringgit for another return ticket to Malaysia. So, next time, you have any problem dealing with airline, immigration or custom procedure, blare them in English, because the shadow of Uncle Sam’s nose will make them shiver and they will render you excellent service.
Thus English is not only important in science and mathematics. However, I do not agree to the Malaysian system of teaching science and mathematics in English. The standard of English can be elevated in many ways, especially by strengthening the teaching of English. For instance, English can be split into several subjects, like English literature, English Grammar, Conversational English, English for Science and Mathematics etc. In Conversational English, the students have to act by speaking English. For example, a student acts as a doctor and another act as a patient. They can also play other roles like tourist and local Malaysian, taxi driver and passenger etc. In the acting, they will also gain the experience of speaking English. If the government think that the present time of learning English is not enough, they can lengthened the school time so that more time can be spent on learning English. They can even make the students studying English for the whole day on Saturday. Then Saturday will not be a rest day for students and teachers.
Hindi is popular not only in India, it is also popular in Pakistan, urban areas of Nepal and parts of Bangladesh. This is because of the Bollywood factor. Hindi is the language of entertainment and young people of the above area are crazy about Hindi film star, singers and entertainment. Similarly in Malaysia most Chinese children speak in Cantonese or Mandarin. Old people laments about the demise of their dialects like Hainanese, Teochew, Hokchew etc. Again this is because of the Hong Kong entertainment factors. Young Malaysian Chinese youth are crazy about Hong Kong movie, TV series and singers. Cantonese is the Hong Kong dialect and most non-Cantonese Chinese in Malaysia can speak or at least understand Cantonese although the Cantonese is not the largest Chinese dialect group in Malaysia. Thus it is high time that English should be made into a language of entertainment in Malaysia. There are less and less English programmes in terrestrial TV channels. A special English TV channel should be set up and broadcast all programmes in English, including educational and entertainment programmes. Let the Malaysian children and youth get crazy on English language. Then their command on English will become superb.
Anyway, don’t believe the myth of commanding excellent English will make Malaysia another Japan or Germany. The Filipinos widely use English in their education system. Yet many Filipinos holding university degrees like Bachelors in English, Science or Mathematics end up becoming maids in Hong Kong and Singapore doing nothing in connection to their university knowledge. They are most welcomed in Hong Kong and Singapore because they can teach English for their employee’s children. Similarly, in the Caribbean, some countries do not have a language of their own and they adopted English as their National Languages. All the citizenry of these countries speak English since their birth and study English from primary to university level. So far not a single Japan or Germany emerge from the Caribbean.. Yet they are so near to the United States and they don’t even make the slightest contribution to the Silicon Valley or NASA of USA.
Every Malaysian supports the elevation of English standard in Malaysia and the myth of whether English language will make Malaysia another Germany or not, should be noted.
In response to KAKI DALAM KASUT
In response to “Kaki Dalam Kasut”
On 20th July 2009, Tun Dr. Mahathir had written an article entitled Kaki Dalam Kasut in his blog. Many non-Malay readers especially the Chinese community were annoyed by this article and many of them labeled him as a racist. However, I think differently. In my opinion he is flattering the Chinese, implying that with their strong economic power, the non-Malay especially the Chinese are the real owner of this country despite the government is Malay-controlled. It is the same thing as flattering an ordinary looking person, as handsome or beautiful. Who is not happy to be praised as handsome or beautiful, especially girls? However, such flattery or unwanted compliments are dangerous as demonstrated in Dr Mahathir’s blog by the response of a Malay who talked about the minute parking incident at the Balakong Jusco Hypermarket.
Tun Dr. Mahathir should be aware that most Chinese are economic homo sapiens. and they can perform economic miracles. Whether they speak Thai, Indonesian, English or other languages, they always aim for financial achievement. They want their children to study hard and the goal is the same, for financial accomplishment and better lives in future. Most Chinese are Buddhist in name but actually they are practicing Confucianism and Taoism. Unlike the Malay, they are not disciplined by religion, but by the law of the legislator and also the teaching of Confucius (Kong Fu Zi), whose verses can be freely assessed by the persons who are practicing it. China, Korea, Japan and Singapore can be regarded as Confucian countries (i.e. countries with ethical value of Rujia Shixiang, the ethical thought of Confucius) and they are the most advanced in economy in Asia. Are you aware that China is now the 4th largest economic entity in the world after USA, Japan and Germany? The most remarkable is China which emerged from famine in the early 1960s to the 4th largest economic entity in the world presently. Nowadays in China beauties wearing bikini parade on stage and can be viewed in the television screen by billions of viewers, a big contrast to the blue uniform and cap every person wore during the pre-Deng Xiao Ping period. They have forgotten the little red book and are not restricted by any holy verses. Most Chinese all over the world amass their wealth through legal and ethical means, as Confucius taught “Jun Zi Ai Cai, Qu Zhi You Dao” which means “A gentlemen may like money but he must make money through the ethical means”.
Nobody is destined to be inferior in financial achievement, but it is the mindset and way of life that determine his destiny. For instance, in Tibet, the Tibetan are real Buddhist and they are in the bondage of their holy verses. Every Tibetan lives like a monk or a nun, by looking at their way of practicing Buddhism. The same thing happens to the Uighur minority in Xinjiang. Both minority in China cannot achieve economically. Thus there were riots in Tibet about 2 years ago and this year again there was a more serious riot in Xinjiang because of the economic disparity between the Han Chinese and the Uighur minority. The root cause of the recent riots in Xinjiang was very similar to the May 13 Incident in Malaysia in 1969. When I look at a pretty young Malay girl with tudong, it reminds me more of a nun in a Christian convent located opposite my alma mater in Ipoh, than a lively and discerning young girl, because the Christian nun wore similar costume.
It was the British who make Malaysia a multi-racial country. Not only Malaysia, the British also make Sri Lanka, Fiji, other British colonies and even their own country, United Kingdom multi-racial. In Fiji, the Indian constitute more that 50 per cent of the population, making the indigenous race a minority . The presence of Chinese community in Malaysia can be a blessing in disguise. As the Chinese abhor law or condition that may change their way of life, they will only support the moderate Malay to be at the rein of the central government and rule this country and the Malay girls will not be flogged because they wear jeans. In today’s newspaper (30.7.09), it is reported that a Sudanese girl working for the United Nation will be flogged 40 times because she wore a long pant (similar to jean). Most of the Malaysian terrorists like Dr. Nordin cannot operate in Malaysia’s multi-racial environment and they have to continue their terrorist activities in a 90 per cent Muslim country like Indonesia. If the Chinese are as rich as what Tun Dr Mahathir had mentioned in his article, then the Proton Saga Plant, KLIA, Penang Bridge and the whole of Putrajaya were built by using the taxes paid by the Chinese. Moreover, without the presence of the Chinese community, Malaysia today will be more similar to Sumatra or Sulawesi.
The Malay population also contributed their merit to the Chinese. The Communists, mainly Chinese, fought to establish a Communist country in Malaya. Although some of the Communist leaders were Malay, but the Malay never accept Communism because of their strong adherence of their faith. Thus the Malay had saved the living style of the Chinese. Otherwise, all Malayan (or Malaysian) including the Chinese, would live like dogs and were still using bicycles today and praying for a Malayan Deng Xiao Ping to emerge.
Confucius once said “Ji Gu Fang Ji”, implying “saving the grain to confront hunger or lean time”. The Chinese like to earn money as well as saving money except bad apples like gamblers and spendthrifts and there are no holy verses to change or restrict their life style. Again, China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Singapore are all rich in their national reserve. American banks find that they cannot make money in issuing credit cards in China because most Chinese pay all for their credit card at the end of the month and they seldom use their card to get money which they have yet to earn. Nowadays, in the economic turmoil, even the Americans have to read the face of the Chinese, who have bought a lot of American bonds. In Malaysia, billion ringgit of government bonds (Amanah Saham) for the non-Malay quota were snapped up within several hours.. The unfinished Bumiputra quota were also snapped up within one day (to be exact within 3 hours, by 12.00 noon, all were sold out). This implies that the non-Malay especially the Chinese not only excel in making money, they are good in saving money too.
When I was a kid, my mother often said the monks were lazy people, chanting their holy verses and doing nothing every day in the temple. That was only my mother’s personal view but I think my mother was Confucian first before she was a Buddhist. The Chinese Buddhists never have the rule to become a monk once in their lifetime as this is contrary to the Confucian teaching. In fact the Chinese minority are controlling the economy and politics in Thailand. In addition, the Thai royal family members have Chinese blood and most the past and present Prime Ministers and Cabinet Ministers are Chinese with Thai names. In Indonesia, the 5% Chinese minority are also in control of the Indonesian economy.
When asked about life after death, Confucius answered “I cannot fully understand my present life, how can I tell you life after death”. Asked about God’s existence, Confucius reply “Xin Zhe You Zhi, Bu Xin Zhe Wu Zhi” meaning “If you believe there is god, then there is, If you do not, it would be otherwise” In many Confucian countries and communities especially the Chinese, they are deeply influenced by such verses. Unfortunately, Confucius never came to South East Asia to teach (not preach, he was just a respected teacher). Otherwise, the indigenous communities of South East Asia will not keep blaming others for their poor economic achievement while they themselves are busy in asking god’s help everyday and do not set a goal to endeavour for financial success.
Dear Tun, don’t over-compliment or flatter a particular race because this will make them feeling proud and other races may envy. This could be catastrophic.
